In my experience using WordPress, I have found that the typical user begins their WordPress career with finding an awesome WordPress theme, and enjoying everything that comes with it. Shortly after they have their theme all set up and running, they start wanting more. They wonder how they can add functionality such as social media, a contact form, or a fancy slider. It’s around this time in their WordPress career that the user will Google something like “How to add a contact form to my WordPress theme?” or maybe “Add twitter to my WordPress theme.” From my experience, this is when the typical user changes from a WordPress investigator to a WordPress convert.

I know for myself, when I began investigating WordPress as a platform, the fancy theme designs are what grabbed my attention first and foremost. My personal WordPress conversion began when I discovered the giant collection of WordPress plugins that were available, and it was clear why WordPress the best “web software you can use to create a beautiful website or blog.” - WordPress.org.

So for all of you investigating WordPress, let me help you understand what a WordPress plugin is.

The unofficial history of WordPress plugins.

From what I understand, in the early years there were many developers creating additional functionality for themes and “plugging” them into their themes. In essence, they were solving the same problems that plugins later came to solve.

The first WordPress plugin was added in 2004 and was called “Hello Dolly” by Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress. This is a very simple plugin that as the plugin description states, “(admin users) will randomly see a lyric from Hello, Dolly in the upper right of your admin screen on every page.” According to Matt, “This is not just a plugin, it symbolizes the hope and enthusiasm of an entire generation summed up in two words sung most famously by Louis Armstrong.” To this day, Hello Dolly comes packed with every install of WordPress.

Later, the popular bbPress plugin was created. The bbPress plugin adds forums to your WordPress theme and has continually been developed to its current version of 2.2.

As of today, there are 22,468 free plugins on the WordPress plugin repository and an estimated 2000+ more that are classified as premium plugins for sale. Trust me when I say that there is a plugin for just about anything and everything you can think of. Go ahead and google the type of functionality you’re looking for, and then add “WordPress plugin” after it. There is a good chance it will pop up.

How WordPress plugins work.

When explaining WordPress plugins to people, I like to think and refer to the following example. I am from Utah where many people come to Moab to come 4-wheeling in Jeeps. You can buy a Jeep because you think it’s the best off road vehicle. That Jeep is completely functional when you leave the auto dealership but if you’re like me, you want to add the cool bells and whistles to make it your own, and make it do what you want when you’re 4-wheeling. Think of the stock Jeep as your WordPress theme and all the cool additions are the WordPress plugins.

Obviously, this is a silly example and I know many people have different views of how these relate but I like to think of the relationship as such. Plugins are pieces of code and technology that you can “plug in” to your WordPress theme. Once the plugin is activated, your theme now has the functionality that the plugin provides, in addition to the basic theme functionality.

How to build a WordPress plugin.

During my WordPress conversion, I began developing themes, and after a couple years of building themes I decided to take my knowledge of the WordPress framework and begin building plugins. If you have built a WordPress theme, many of the practices should be self explanatory and extend into plugins. But if they aren’t crystal clear, as they often weren’t for me, there are many comprehensive tutorials on how to get started building a plugin from the WordPress community. Here are a few:

Plugin Codex

WP Smashing Magazine

Pippins Plugins

Mark Jaquith

Buying WordPress plugins.

We launched Mojo-Code a couple months ago as a sister marketplace to Mojo-Themes for people specifically searching to buy and sell premium WordPress plugins and scripts. There are many free plugins in the market and we feel strongly that paid plugins come with more than just a price tag. You can expect quality support, lifetime updates, and the backing of the Mojo community. We have WordPress plugins for many different categories such as the following:

E-commerce

Easy Digital Downloads

JigoShop

WooCommerce

Galleries

Social Media

And many more…

WordPress Conversion.

My goal with this post is to help educate the casual user of WordPress themes to better understand the platform of WordPress and take everyone from investigating to conversion.

What made you go from an investigator to convert of WordPress?

The affiliate program on the MOJO marketplaces is a great resource to increase your earning potential. If you’re like me, you often assume affiliate programs can be complex and sometimes difficult to understand especially when it comes to earnings, payouts and even link structure. We have tried very hard to keep our affiliate program simple and effective. I’m going to highlight below how the affiliate program works and why I think it can instantly increase your earnings on the MOJO marketplaces.

1. Joining the program

Joining could not be more simple. All you need to do is just create an account with any of the marketplaces and you’re all set to begin. There isn’t an application process or anything like that, just create your account.

2. Earnings

For most people, earnings are the deciding factor when deciding to be an affiliate. Here is how it works. For every person that you refer to a MOJO marketplace you will be given 30% of their initial purchase order value. So for example, write a post about the marketplaces or place a banner linking to the marketplaces. When that person signs up and buys a couple items and checks out for a total of $70. You will receive a commission of $24.50.

Note: Most marketplaces do not use a shopping cart but still have the same affiliate earnings structure. The downside to this is the order value of a site not using a shopping cart compared to a site using a shopping cart is much different. When buyers purchase items on the MOJO marketplaces often times their order consists of many items.

3. Link Structure

Like I mentioned earlier, the link structure on many sites can be confusing. We have simplified the link structure so that all you need to know is your username.

Link Structure: http://www.mojo-code.com/?r=username

All you need to do is add ?r= and then your username on any link and you will get credit for that referral.

4. Reporting

Inside your account center there is a section in the left sidebar called statistics under Affiliates. If you click that you can see the accounting for your affiliate efforts.

5. Payouts

Once your account has reached a balance of at least $50 you can then request a withdrawal from within your account center. We pay NET 15 via PayPal. It is important to remember that you need to request your payout during the last three days of the month to be paid on the 15th of the next month.

Thats it! On top of this, we have some exciting new metrics that will be added to the affiliate statistics section of your account centers. The new metrics should help you better understand the performance of your efforts so stay tuned for that.

When selling on a marketplace such as Mojo-Code there are the obvious challenges that a seller faces such as how to make your items standout and how to create items that buyers are actually searching for. Well, I have compiled a small set of search queries since we launched and ranked them by the quantity of searches. Take a look at what the results are showing for the first few days of the marketplace.

Booking – (PHP)

WooCommerce – (WordPress)

Order Form – (PHP)

Shortcodes – (WordPress)

Scheduled Content

Slider – (JS)

Rating

Email Marketing – (PHP)

Knowledgebase

There are few results that I feel are worth highlighting such as booking, scheduled content, and knowledgebase. I did not expect these queries to be among our most searched terms and clearly there is a demand for support/booking type code.

When it comes time to work on your next item, be sure to keep in mind these searches as we know customers are looking for these type of products.

As we celebrate the launch of our second marketplace what better way to kick things off then a contest for our MOJO Sellers! This contest will be our biggest one yet! In an effort to add more items within the marketplace we’re offering an upload bonus to sellers who upload any new items.

In return for uploading, we’re offering cash bonuses ($50-$300) to early sellers who upload. For example you could upload a WordPress plugin, Javascript file, CSS file, etc. and we’ll pay you cash the same day your item is approved.

Here’s a few of the categories we need and some of the items we’re looking for:

WordPress Plugins (Calendars, Sliders, Galleries, Forms, SEO, Ecommerce (Woo, Jigo), etc.

Javascript Files (Sliders, Modals, Forms, Navigation, Galleries, etc.)

PHP Scripts (Forms, Loaders/Uploaders, Mailers, etc.)

CSS Files (Menus, Buttons, Forms, Tables, etc.)

HTML5 Files

We’re paying anywhere from $50-$300 per item plus of course earning commissions on-going for each sale. You can upload as many items as you would like but they have to be exclusive items and they have to be approved.

START UPLOADING! This contest is limited time only so don’t miss out on some big cash bonuses. We look forward to seeing some awesome items added to the marketplace!
